Ross Interview Features Latest on Distracted Driving
10/6/2009
An interview with Rep. Chris Ross (R-Chester) on legislative efforts to address distracted driving is now available on his Web site, www.repross.com.

“I am attempting to take a comprehensive approach to discouraging all forms of distracted driving, including talking or texting on cell phones, eating and putting on makeup",” Ross said. “Traffic safety experts have told me that we need a penalty and a comprehensive education program.”

Ross has proposed legislation, now in the state Senate, which would make all forms of distracted driving a secondary offense – similar to the way the seat belt law is enforced now.

Speaking recently at the federal Distracted Driving Summit, Dr. Tom Dingus, director of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, said that driver education was the best way to prevent distracted driving.

Last year, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Transportation, 5,870 people died and 515,000 were injured in crashes in which some form of distracted driving was cited in the crash report.
